Wexford Drama Group Auditions

On May 16, 2011, in Uncategorized, by dramawexford

Following their recent success at the All Ireland Amateur Drama Finals in Athlone, Wexford Drama Group are back in the saddle as they begin preparations for this year’s Summer production.

Paul Walsh, Chairperson of WDG will direct Conor McPherson’s ‘The Wier’, which will be staged over two weekends in July and August. Wexford Drama Group have taken a more literal approach to this production – as the play will take place in Dixie’s Bar on Wexford Quays.

‘The back of Dixie’s bar lends itself well to this type of performance’ says Paul Walsh.’It’s a natural setting for The Weir and it will hopefully give our audience a more interesting experience too. Set in an Irish pub the play is basically a group of characters who have a few tales to tell. It’s funny, sad and dramatic and it could be any small local pub in Ireland on any given night of the week’ he concluded.

Wexford Drama Group Return to Athlone

On April 6, 2011, in Uncategorized, by dramawexford

After a gruelling circuit run which brought the group to every corner of Ireland Wexford Drama Group have finally reached their Holy Grail and will return to the RTE Amateur All-Ireland Open Drama Finals in Athlone at the end of April.

There were huge celebrations in Simon’s Place on Saturday 2nd of April when word came in that the results had gone in our favour in the Newry Drama Festival and that Wexford Drama Group would sneak into Athlone in 9th place.

The circuit started out wonderful for the group when they won their second festival and Director Thomas O’Leary picked up his first ever Best Director’s award in Rush. Thereafter though things got tougher and after some unlucky results the group came into the second last weekend of festivals needing two seconds or a first.
These seconds were achieved in Strabane and Rathangan and it all came down to the final result in Newry which luckily went as we would have wanted and on Sunday last Wexford Drama Group found themselves back in Athlone for the first time in four years.
Huge congratulations go to all the members of the team who worked so hard to achieve this goal. Many of these individuals picked up personal awards along the way with all the girls in the play picking up acting awards, most notably Adrienne Meyler who picked up an astounding 4 out of seven possible best actress awards and the technical team who were rewarded at almost every festival.

After four long years of trying the group have achieved their goal of returning to the national finals in Athlone anything hereafter is a bonus.
